However, as time has gone by more and more companies have seen the potential in these cards and the range of services redeemable has gradually diversified.

Once upon a time only a handful of airlines offered these cards, but now travel agents have come on board and unsurprisingly banks and building society's have muscled in on the action too.

No! These cards would be limited to a very specific audience if they only allowed you to use the air miles as actual air miles. The increased diversity of companies offering these cards has also broadened their usability.

To choose the correct type of air mile credit card for you, it is important that you look at what you want to spend your rewards on.

Credit cards offered by a specific airline will usually give you greater overall discounts, but will only be redeemable with their airline, on their flights. At the other end of the spectrum banks and building societies, have no specific ties to any one company so offer a broader range of rewards, but at less of a discount. In the centre of this card pile lie travel agents who will offer a range of services that they provide at a rate somewhere in the middle of the two.
