How football credit cards work...
Football credit cards are a great way to show allegiance to your favourite club, whilst collecting some rewards for yourself.
The majority of major clubs offer affinity credit cards, so if you are fed up of looking at the same bank branding everyday, why not change it to a logo you love?
Which teams offer credit cards?
The majority of big clubs - predominantly premiership sides - offer these credit cards, however, if you are a general fan of the game with no specific team ties, there is now an England FA credit card and the Barclays Premier League credit card on offer.
Of course, the football clubs themselves do not manage your finances. This would be a far too scary prospect considering the financial plight of many sides. Instead, the football clubs team up with a bank or building society to provide these cards for the mutual benefit of both parties.
The bank benefits by having their company name associated with a good cause and the club benefits from free/subsidised advertising and exposure, as well as the profits they receive.
How does the card benefit me?
Aside from the obvious ability to flash your card to your mates and the bar tender - proving once and for all, that you are the ultimate (insert football team of choice here) fan - these cards also offer you points when you make purchases. The points you earn can subsequently be collected and redeemed for rewards, both generic and club specific.
How does the card benefit the club?
When you use your football credit card to make purchases, the bank that operates the card, will be obligated to pay your club a small percentage of the profits they make. On a personal scale the figures may seem small, but calculated over a year for the thousands of fans holding the card, the numbers look much more impressive.
Money is also generated by fans purchasing club merchandise with their reward points, not to mention the increased advertising and awareness the cards brings.
How does the card benefit the bank?
The bank supporting the club is not a big enough fan to provide their services as a gesture of good will.
The bank receives increased exposure and advertising from the highly lucrative football club they support. On top of this, enraptured and inebriated fans are likely to spend lots of needless cash on their card in the pub whilst boasting to their friends about their new credit card. These spending sprees are likely to result in increased interest for the bank, offsetting any donations they have made to your club...
...However, if you are careful enough to never carry a balance over you will have succeeded in forcing the bank to pay out money for nothing, which doesn't happen very often!
