Football Credit Cards

How to choose a football credit card...

Ditch your standard credit card for a football credit card and you can get the same deals as a regular credit card, but on a swanky piece of plastic branded with your team's logo and colours.

If you are a regular spender and a conscientious re-payer, these cards could clock up a few extra pounds for your club, whilst earning you some rewards for yourself.

These cards are good for:

Football fans
These cards work in a similar way, and charge similar rates to a standard credit card, but they offer some added incentives that you won't get from a standard credit card.

  1. If you love the beautiful game, and consider one club to be more beautiful than any other, these cards are a great way to give a bit extra to your team.

Every time you use you card for purchases a small portion of the banks profit will be donated to your club. The money is then used to support the future of the club, through soccer schools and football academies.

  2. When you use the card to make purchases you will earn reward points, redeemable for generic items, such as travel and entertainment, as well as club specific merchandise including limited edition goods and special prize draws.

  3. Some cards also offer bonuses such as 0% balance transfer deals or 0% introductory rates when you first sign up.

These cards are unsuitable for:

A poor credit history
Although, football credit cards are offered as classic and platinum cards, most still insist on a sound credit rating and a good annual income

If you have a poor credit rating why not look at credit cards aimed at rebuilding credit score. See our Bad credit rating credit cards.

Balance carrier
If you are the type that usually makes the minimum repayments, but rarely manages to pay off your card in full at the end of the month, then these cards will not be worth your while, as...

... any interest you are charged through carrying a balance will eliminate any donations made on your behalf.

If you miss just one payment your donations will be outweighed by the accumulated interest charges.

Look for:

Added incentives
Some football credit card offer bonus incentives such as 0% introductory purchase rates, or 0% balance transfer rates for the first X number of months after opening the account.

N.B Some of the platinum cards also offer perks like card protection plans and higher credit limits.

Watch out for:

Balance transfer offers
If you plan on taking advantage of the 0% balance transfer deal to pay off a hefty debt from a previous card, be careful not to fall into the 'allocation of payments trap'.

Credit card companies across the board have an 'allocation of payments' rule stating that you have to pay off an account balance according to its rate of interest, starting with the lowest interest...

... i.e. If you transfer over a large balance, hoping to pay it off over the next 6 months, then subsequently use the card to make purchases, you will have to pay off the entire 0% balance you have transferred before the high interest spending debt.

Don't forget:

Which transactions don't make donations?
A percentage donation is made by the card issuer for any purchases made with the card, however donations aren made for:

  • Balance transfers
  • Cash withdrawals
  • Checkout cash back
  • Foreign currency purchase
  • Gambling transactions
  • Interest charges or fees
