Money News Round Up 14th March 2008
Julia Kukiewicz glances back at the week's personal finance news and reveals just what was in Alistair Darling's red briefcase; the good and the bad... as well as who's offering free cavity wall insulation for the over 70's.

'Saga Louts' Ignore Travel Insurance

A report from the foreign office claims that Brits over 55 take risks when they go on holiday by binge drinking and not purchasing travel insurance.

More than 1 in 10 of the so-called 'Saga-louts' don't follow the advice they would give to their own children, the report claims, and risk shelling out on ultra-expensive hospital bills after over-indulging.

The report comes a week after a similar survey which found that older people were more likely than ever to risk contracting sexually transmitted diseases by not using contraception.

Come on now guys you should know better. You can get great deals on both travel insurance and condoms these days (although please only ask us about that first one.)

Mortgage Approvals Continue to Fall

Less and less people are taking up mortgages it was revealed this week.

Statistics from the British Bankers Accosiation showed an apporoximate 33% drop in the number of approved mortgages compared to this time last year.

The figures are further proof that the credit crunch and stricter lending standards are discouraging consumers from borrowing.

It's not all bad news, however, the slowdown in take-up has resulted in some banks raising their game. The Woolwich's new 10-year fixed rate plan has a rate of 5.29% and other banks have similar deals waiting to be snapped up.

A Good Week for Divorce Lawyers...

It seems like it's a good time to be a divorce lawyer as the office for national statistic reveals that 45% of marriages are likely to end in divorce.

Almost half these splits will occur before a couple reaches the 10 year mark and just 10% of married couples are likely to be together to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

Bad news for romance isn't necessarily bad financal news for everyone though.

The ex- Mrs Paul Mcartney walked away with a cool £24.3m this week. Shame about the shattered reputation though, Heather.

And a Bad Week for, Erm...

And a bad week for an unknown person in Devon. This Wednesday the deadline passed for a Euromillions lottery ticket from Sepetmber last year worth almost £7m.

According to lottery operator Camelot attempts to trace the (not so) lucky winner came to naught. The ticket is the second largest win not be claimed - a £9.4m rollover also escaped in 2005. However, it's not all bad news as the winnings will be donated to charity.

No doubt the winning ticket will turn up in the back of the sofa next week. It's always the way...

And Finally, if you only do one Thing This Week...

And finally if you only do one thing this financal week make sure that you check out your entitlement to council tax rebate or benefits.

Council tax bills will rise by around 4% this year so it's more important than ever that you check if you could be entitled to some of the estimated £1.8 billion a year which goes unclaimed in benefits.
